Final remarks of the GMHS 2022

The fourth edition of the Global Mental Health Summit (GMHS) was held in Rome on 13th and 14th October 2022. The venue was the Monumental Complex of Santo Spirito in Sassia, in the premises of the oldest hospital in Europe. The event was organized by the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the Italian National Institute of Health.

The core of the Summit has been related to the community approach to mental health, that Italy has pioneered with Law 180 of 1978, promoted by Franco Basaglia, which led to the closure of psychiatric hospitals in our country.

The event, broadcasted live in English, French and Italian, was attended by 52 delegations from countries and international organizations. The Summit involved also national and international experts, representatives of Associations and Federations and people with lived experiences, that provided their testimony.

In the opening session, among others, speeches were provided by the Ukrainian first lady, Olena Zelenska, the Director General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and Stella Kyriakides, EU Commissioner for Health. Unanimous consensus was established on the fact that "there is no health without mental health" and that mental health is a global priority for health policies, especially in consideration of the international health and humanitarian crises of the recent years.

At the end of the Summit, the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, passed the baton to Carla Vizzotti, Minister of Health of Argentina, country that will host the GMHS in 2023.

The main themes at the heart of the GMHS were:

  • human rights and dignity of people with mental disorders
  • centrality of the community approach to mental health
  • involvement in the psychosocial care and recovery process of those directly affected and their families
  • fight against stigma
  • mental well-being in the workplace and in the most vulnerable sectors of the population, including children and adolescents
  • italian and international best practices related to prevention and care strategies.
